Take your skills to a hire level

Interview Tips

Interviews are your opportunity to sell your skills and abilities. They also allow for you to ask questions to see if the company will be a good fit for you as well. Here are some helpful tips to help you prepare. Remember, first impressions are lasting.

Do your research

Success starts with a solid foundation of knowledge of the position and company you are interested in pursuing. It will also help you with insightful answers and questions.

Arrive early

Arriving late to an interview is unacceptable. Strive to be at least 15 minutes early, get settled and turn off your cell phone.

Wear proper attire

Dress for success. Wear attire that fits with the organization and culture in the most professional manner. It's better to be overdressed than under.

Have a good handshake

A good handshake shows confidence and your social skills. Make it firm, but not bone crushing; give a confident smile and maintain eye contact.

Maintain eye contact

Though it may be uncomfortable at times eye contact conveys confidence, honesty, manners and interest. The right amount can make for a successful interview.

Be prepared

Show the interviewer your level of interest. Take notes and ask questions about company culture and the position that may not have been advertised.

Show personality

Don't give short answers, bring examples and explain situations. This will open up conversations and allow you to show off your talents.

Be confident

Be aware of your body language. Try not to fidget, talk too fast, quietly or avoid eye contact. Slow down, be calm and be confident.

No phones

It should go without saying — phones are a no go. Be sure to turn your phone off or, at the very least, on silent before going in. Best practice: leave your phone in the car before you go in.

Follow up

Show common courtesy and politeness with a quick thank-you email. It only takes a minute to write a quick message. It'll give you an edge over the competition.
